Cloud Baby Shower Ideas (DIY Clouds, Dessert Table & Budget)
Part of our guide: Baby Shower Ideas: The Complete Guide

A cloud baby shower is soft, simple, and works for a boy, a girl, or a surprise. The look is white and pale blue, with clouds hanging from the ceiling and a dessert table full of light sweets. These cloud baby shower ideas cover the DIY clouds, a balloon cloud garland, a “cloud nine” dessert table, games, favors, and exactly what you need for 20 guests.
At DecorWillow, our top tip is to hang the clouds at different heights. A cloud ceiling gives the room depth with very little money, and the guests look up at it as soon as they walk in.

The cloud color palette
Keep the palette light, and add one warm color so it does not look cold:
| Color | Where to use it |
|---|---|
| Sky blue | Balloons, napkins, ribbon |
| White | Clouds, tablecloth, cupcakes |
| Soft gray | A few balloons, cloud shadows |
| Pale yellow | A “sun” balloon, small accents |
Sky blue, white, gray, and a touch of yellow keep the look soft and fresh.
Decoration ideas
Pick three or four of these:
- A row of 6 hanging clouds, made by hand (steps below).
- A balloon cloud garland in white, sky blue, soft gray, and clear balloons. Here is how to make a balloon garland without a kit, and more mixes in our balloon garland color ideas.
- A welcome sign that says “Baby on cloud nine” on a white board.
- Two strands of warm white string lights. See our fairy light ideas.
- A pale yellow balloon as the “sun” at one end of the garland.
- A small baby item in the display, like a stuffed lamb or a pair of tiny shoes, sitting on a fluffy cloud.

DIY hanging clouds
You can make one cloud in about 15 minutes. Six clouds take about 1.5 hours.
What you need for 6 clouds: 6 pieces of foam board or thick cardboard (about 12 by 18 inches), 1 bag of polyester fiberfill (16 ounces), a hot glue gun, fishing line, a marker, and 6 battery tea lights or a battery light strand (optional).
- Draw a cloud shape on the foam board, about 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall. Cut it out with scissors or a craft knife.
- Pull the fiberfill into thin, fluffy pieces, and glue them on the board in layers. Leave the edges messy and uneven so it looks like a cloud.
- Turn the cloud over and glue a loop of fishing line at the top. Use 3 to 5 feet of line.
- Tuck a battery LED light strand into the fiberfill on a few clouds so they glow. Use LED lights only (see safety tips below).
- Hang the clouds at different heights in groups of 2 or 3. Over walkways and seating, keep every cloud at least 6 feet above the floor. Over the dessert table, keep the lowest cloud at least 18 inches above the table.
Hang them from ceiling hooks or tape. Check the package for the weight limit, since each cloud weighs about 3 ounces. No ceiling attachments allowed? Hang the clouds from a tension rod, a curtain rod, or a clothesline stretched between two walls, or stand 2 or 3 clouds on the dessert table.
Six clouds at different heights give the room depth.
The cloud balloon garland
A cloud garland uses the same method as any balloon garland, with softer colors:
- Use white as the main color, about 50 percent of the balloons.
- Add sky blue (25 percent), soft gray (15 percent), and clear balloons (10 percent).
- Mix 5 inch, 11 inch, and a few 16 inch balloons, and cluster them like a cloud, with a pale yellow balloon as the “sun.”
- A 6-foot garland needs about 60 balloons, plus 10 spares.
Before and after
You only need one corner of the room. Here is the same corner before and after. The changes are a table with a white cloth, a garland, three hanging clouds, a sign, and a string of lights. It takes about 2 hours.
One empty corner becomes a cloud nine spot.
Cloud nine dessert table
Keep the food light, to match the theme:
- Cotton candy: a bowl or a few small bags. One 1 ounce portion per guest is plenty.
- Meringues and marshmallow cookies, white and pale blue.
- White cupcakes with white frosting, or a cake with a cloud topper.
- Donuts: mini donuts with a white glaze.
- Drinks: a “sky” punch with lemon-lime soda and blue sports drink, or plain lemonade, and a water pitcher.
- Savory: a grazing board with cheese, crackers, and fruit, and mini sandwiches. See our baby shower food ideas.
For the full setup see our baby shower dessert table guide.
Cotton candy, meringues, and white cupcakes fit the theme and the budget.
Games
Pick 2 or 3 games:
| Game | How to play | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud nine wishes | Each guest writes a wish or tip for the baby on a paper cloud and hangs it on a string. | 15 minutes |
| Cotton ball toss | Toss 3 cotton balls each into a bucket from 6 feet. | 10 minutes |
| Guess the marshmallows | Fill a 1 quart jar with mini marshmallows. Closest guess wins. | 5 minutes |
| Sky word scramble | Unscramble words like “rainbow” and “sunshine” in 3 minutes. | 10 minutes |
For more rules and ideas see our baby shower games.
How to play two of them:
- Cloud nine wishes: Cut 25 white paper clouds, about 4 inches wide. Put them in a basket with a pen. Guests write a wish, and clip it to a string with a mini clothespin. Read a few aloud during gifts, and give the string to the parents.
- Cotton ball toss: Put a bucket 6 feet away and mark the line with tape. Each guest gets 3 cotton balls. The best score wins a small prize.
A 2.5-hour shower plan
Start at 2 p.m.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0:00 to 0:30 | Guests arrive, get a drink, and take photos at the garland |
| 0:30 to 0:50 | Cloud nine wishes and cotton ball toss |
| 0:50 to 1:20 | Food |
| 1:20 to 1:50 | Gifts |
| 1:50 to 2:10 | Cake and cupcakes |
| 2:10 to 2:30 | Marshmallow guess, favors, and goodbyes |
Safety tips
- Fiberfill: polyester fiberfill can burn, so check the package for flame warnings. Use LED lights only, keep the clouds away from candles, heaters, and hot bulbs, and do not use real candles in the room.
- Hanging: use hooks rated for the weight, and keep the clouds away from fans and walkways.
- Cotton candy: it gets sticky and melts in humid rooms, so put it out last, in a bowl with a lid.
- Allergies: ask guests about nuts, gluten, and dairy on the invitation. Meringues have egg white, and donuts and cupcakes have gluten and dairy. Offer a plain option.
- Food temperature: keep cold food at 40 F or below and hot food at 140 F or above, and put out food for no more than 2 hours.
- Balloons: keep broken pieces away from young children.

Exact quantities you need
For 20 guests:
- Balloons: 70 for a 6-foot garland (60 plus 10 spares): about 35 white, 17 sky blue, 10 gray, 6 clear, and 2 pale yellow.
- Hanging clouds: 6, each about 14 by 9 inches.
- Foam board: 6 pieces (12 by 18 inches).
- Fiberfill: 1 bag of 16 ounces.
- Fishing line: 30 feet.
- String lights: 2 strands of 25 feet.
- Cotton candy: 20 portions of 1 ounce.
- Meringues and cookies: 40 pieces (2 per guest).
- Cupcakes: 24, and mini donuts: 24.
- Savory bites: 4 per guest, so 80 pieces.
- Drinks: 40 cups, which is 2.5 gallons.
- Game supplies: 25 paper clouds, 60 cotton balls, 1 bucket, and 1 quart jar of marshmallows.
Budget breakdown
This assumes 20 guests and a garland you make yourself. Pick the column that fits you:
| Item | Budget version | Full version |
|---|---|---|
| Balloon garland (about 70 balloons: 60 plus 10 spares, strip, glue dots) | $18 | $18 |
| 6 hanging clouds with hooks (DIY: foam board, fiberfill, line, glue, hooks) | $18 (DIY) | $34 (bought paper clouds and hooks) |
| String lights (2 strands) | $12 | $12 |
| Welcome sign | $5 (homemade) | $12 |
| Savory bites and drinks | $40 | $60 |
| Sweets (cotton candy, meringues, donuts) | $30 | $45 |
| Cake or 24 cupcakes | $18 (homemade) | $40 (bought) |
| Games and prizes | $10 | $15 |
| Favors (mini cotton candy bags with a tag) | $20 | $35 |
| Total | $171 | $271 |
These are planning estimates for U.S. stores, exclude tax, and vary by store and region. Plates, napkins, and cups are not included, so add about $15 for 20 guests.
Worth it vs skip
- Worth it: the hanging clouds and the garland. They fill the room for very little money, and they show up in every photo.
- Skip: printed plates and a big backdrop. Plain white plates and one garland look cleaner and cost less.
Small space version
Use 3 clouds hung at different heights, a 3-foot garland of about 30 balloons, and one dessert table. Skip the cotton ball toss and play the wishes game and the marshmallow guess while everyone sits down. Put the food on one table, and serve drinks from a side table.
Setup and shopping timeline
- 2 to 3 weeks before: Send invitations with an allergy note, and order the cake if you are buying one.
- 1 week before: Buy balloons, lights, foam board, fiberfill, and the sweets that keep well.
- 1 day before: Make the 6 clouds (about 1.5 hours), then build the garland and cut the paper clouds (about 1 hour). Takes about 2.5 hours in total.
- The day of: Hang the clouds and the garland, set the tables, put out the cotton candy last, and set out the food. Takes about 2 hours.
Favor ideas
- A small bag of cotton candy with a tag that says “Thanks for making us feel on cloud nine.”
- A mini cloud-shaped sugar cookie.
- A small jar of blue and white sprinkles with a tag.
- A seed packet or a mini candle (if allowed).
- See our budget baby shower decorations for other ideas that cost little.

FAQ
How do you decorate for a cloud baby shower?

How do you make hanging clouds for a baby shower?
Cut a cloud shape about 14 by 9 inches from foam board, glue thin layers of polyester fiberfill on it, and attach 3 to 5 feet of fishing line. Make 6 clouds and hang them at different heights. It takes about 15 minutes per cloud, or about 1.5 hours in total.
What colors work for a cloud baby shower?
Sky blue, white, soft gray, and a touch of pale yellow. The palette works for a boy, a girl, or a surprise baby. Use white as the main color and blue as the accent.
What food do you serve at a cloud baby shower?
Serve cotton candy, meringues, white cupcakes, mini donuts, a sky punch, and a grazing board with mini sandwiches. For 20 guests plan 20 portions of cotton candy, 2 meringues per guest, and 4 savory bites per guest.
How much does a cloud baby shower cost?
A cloud baby shower for 20 guests costs about $171 for a budget version with DIY clouds and a homemade cake, or about $271 for a full version with bought clouds and a bought cake. Plates, napkins, and cups add about $15.
What games work for a cloud baby shower?
Cloud nine wishes on paper clouds, a cotton ball toss, a guess-the-marshmallows jar, and a sky word scramble. Pick 2 or 3 games so the shower stays at about 2.5 hours.
Is fiberfill safe for baby shower decorations?
Polyester fiberfill burns easily, so use LED lights only, keep the clouds away from candles, heaters, and hot bulbs, and do not use real candles in the room. Hang the clouds from hooks rated for the weight.
Can I hang clouds without ceiling hooks?
Yes. Hang the clouds from a tension rod, a curtain rod, or a clothesline stretched between two walls, or stand 2 or 3 clouds on the dessert table. Keep every cloud at least 6 feet above the floor over walkways and seating.
Can I make a cloud baby shower on a small budget?
Yes. A DIY version costs about $171 for 20 guests, and the biggest savings come from making the 6 clouds yourself for about $18 and baking your own cupcakes. A smaller shower for 10 guests needs about half the food.
